AREAS OF RESEARCH

 

  • Bond and Development of Reinforcement. Effect of several variables on bond strength and bond-slip characteristics of reinforcement anchored or spliced or hooked in bond-critical regions of reinforced concrete structures. Variables include bar rib geometry, bar coating, bar galvanization, transverse reinforcement, specimen type and size, concrete strength, and the use of pozzolanic materials such as fly ash and silica fume. Other variables include the effect of fiber reinforcement added in the bond critical regions during casting and confinement of the bond critical regions with fiber reinforced polymer wraps.
  • Repair and Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Structures. Case studies of under-designed and cracked reinforced concrete structures. Case studies of the effect of fire, blasting, or earthquakes on reinforced concrete structures. Evaluation and assessment techniques. Methods of repair and strengthening.
  • Concrete Technology. Study of the effect of different variables on properties of fresh and hardened concrete including: cement type, pozzolanic materials and by-products, chemical admixtures, and industrial wastes. Concrete durability: chemical and physical attacks. High strength concrete. Self-compacting concrete. Study of the geology and the petrographic, chemical, and mechanical properties of aggregates.
  • Sustainable concrete construction materials: The use of natural fibers such as hemp to improve performance of construction components and reduce depletion in natural resources. The objective is to identify new materials or create novel cement/concrete mixes that encapsulate sustainable elements while satisfying strength and improving performance requirements such as durability and thermal properties. Study of the effect of replacing natural coarse aggregates with recycled coarse aggregates from tested cylinders in batching plants on the plastic & hardened mechanical properties of concrete and on the structural performance of reinforced concrete members.

 

PUBLICATIONS

  • Has more than 100 publications including reports, refereed international journal papers, and refereed papers in proceedings of international and regional conferences. All publications are in the areas of structural engineering and concrete and material technology.
  • Has been reviewer of several papers submitted for publication in international refereed journals including ACI (American Concrete Institute), ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), and Elsevier journals.

AWARDS

 

  • Received The WAAAUB 2013 Distinguished Graduate Award in grateful recognition of exceptional service to AUB and its alumni and for remarkable contribution to the profession, June 22, 2013.
  • Was elected in the Academy of Distinguished Alumni in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering of the University of Texas at Austin. The induction ceremony was on November 11, 2011.
  • Received the 1995 ACI (American Concrete Institute) Structural Research Award for best paper published in 1993-94: "Strength of Epoxy-Coated Reinforcing Bar Splices Confined with Transverse Reinforcement", ACI Structural Journal, V.90, No. 1, Jan.-Feb. 1993, pp. 77- 88.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Over 40 years, Dr. Hamad has acquired wide experience in the design, supervision, and construction of reinforced concrete structures in Lebanon, Jordan, Nigeria and other African countries, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab Gulf states.

Dr. Hamad is the founder and General Manager of "CODE Consultants & Designers sarl”, an engineering firm with experts in the different architectural, structural, and electro-mechanical areas of engineering.

CODE’s Areas of Expertise:

  • Design and modeling of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete (pre-tensioned and post-tensioned), and structural steel structures including buildings, towers, highway pavements, and bridges. Bridges include small, medium, and large span bridge crossings in urban and rural settings. The design includes architectural, structural, and electro-mechanical trades.
  • Preparation of execution and shop drawings for all design trades.
  • Technical control, design review, optimization, and Value Engineering of major reinforced concrete and steel structures.
  • Strengthening of existing structures.
  • Assessment, strengthening, and repair of war-damaged, fire-damaged, and earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete structures.

1. Summer 1976
Trainee with Dar Al Handasah (Shair)

2. 1976 TO 1977
Structural Engineer with Dar Al Handasah (Shair). Beside other smaller assignments, was a member in a team of four structural engineers who designed the Shmaisani Center in Amman, Jordan.

3. 1979 TO 1982
Senior Structural Engineer with Bureau D'Ingenieurs Conseils, where he was in charge of the design and supervision of several residential, educational, and commercial projects in Lebanon, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

4. 1983 TO 1988
Established an engineering office. Jobs included:

 

  • Design of several concrete and steel building structures in Lebanon, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia
  • Concrete works construction of several building structures in Beirut
  • Design and execution of repair and strengthening schemes of several building structures which were hit and partially damaged during the Israeli invasion of Beirut
  • Member of a team of experts commissioned in 1987 to investigate more than 30 under-designed building structures in South Lebanon (Sour). Assessment reports were prepared, strengthening and underpinning schemes were designed, and construction procedures were supervised.
